Accused Murderer of Former Jamaican Hip-Hop Executive Remanded to NY Jail
By Alicia CruzThe Black Urban Times
The man accused of killing former Jamaican hip-hop executive, Yoseph Robinson, was in Brooklyn Supreme Court Tuesday where a judge set his bail at $50,000 and remanded him into custody, The New York Post reported.
Eion Klass, 33, clad in black jeans, sneakers and a torn blue and white striped shirt, stood silently while his lawyer Alan Stutman addressed the judge stating that his client had been held in the 70th Precinct since Monday under "extremely hostile circumstances."
"He was in custody for three days and they were threatening him. They were going at him pretty hard," Stutman said after the arraignment.
However, Assistant DA Wilfredo Coto told the judge that while in the custody of police on another case, Klass injured two officers while he was being interrogated when he attempted to flee the police station.
The dred-locked street sweeper, who works for the Downtown Alliance, has denied knowing Robinson or ever being in the liquor store, MB Vineyards wine shop, where the hip-hop-executive-turned-Orthodox Jew was killed.
The NY Post reported that Klass, who was apprehended Monday on an outstanding warrant for a June 28 assault and robbery on the husband of a former girlfriend, has made a statement to police but the DAs office would not release it at this time.
According to police reports, Klass attacked Patrick Walters, the husband of his former girlfriend, by striking him with a blunt object. The judge issued a restraining order against Klass in that case.
Raised in Spanish Town, Jamaica by his Grandma Pearl, Robinson and his siblings joined his parents in the United States in 1989. He was raised in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, New York in 1989. At some point he became involved with selling drugs but recently turned his life around to become a devout Orthodox Jew inspiring leaders of both the black and Jewish communities across the city, as well as numerous Brooklyn officials.
Robinson was shot twice in his chest as he attempted to stop a man from stealing a bracelet from his girlfriend, Lahavah Wallace. Community leaders mourned his death, saying he was a recognizable character whom everyone loved. Chaim Deutsch of Flatbush Shomrim said, "Everybody has enemies and, Yoseph, you don't find that one person that has anything bad to say about him. Only a person that's an angel doesn't have enemies like Yoseph."
Robinson was in the throes of a divorce and custody battle against his wife in California at the time of his murder, and had just been granted joint custody less than a month ago, court records show.
He accused his estranged wife of keeping him from visiting or calling their 6-year-old daughter and of "straying from an observant lifestyle," which he deemed "psychologically damaging to our daughter."
Robinson leaves to mourn a 14-year-old son in Philadelphia, an 11-year-old son, 8-year-old daughter in Virginia and his 6-year-old daughter in California.

Star Soccer Player, Phillip Tisson, Shot Dead in Brooklyn

The Black Urban Times
A member of the St. Lucia national soccer team was shot dead early Monday in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn just hours after he aced the winning goal to send his team to the championship.
Isidore Phillip Tisson was sitting in the back seat of a parked vehicle outside the Tropiks nightclub on Utica Avenue when he suffered a single gun shot wound to the head, police said. The 27-year-old soccer star had stopped to buy bananas around 4 a.m. before heading home when the murder took place.
Tisson had just entered the vehicle with companion Shawnette Justin, 24, when an unknown person approached from behind, and opened fire.
The bullet exited Tisson's head and struck Justin who was seated next to him, in the chest. She is in stable condition at Brookdale Hospital, police said. Tissan and his teammates had been celebrating their 1-0 victory over St. Kitts in the Digicel Caribbean Cup tournament the night of this senseless tragedy.
"I heard the noise and then I felt the pain," the wounded woman, Shawnette Justin, 24, told the Daily News in a bedside interview at Brookdale University Hospital. "When I turned to see what was wrong, I saw the blood coming from his head."
The other occupants in the vehicle were uninjured by the gunshot, The NY Daily News reported. The driver drove as fast as he could to get Tisson to the hospital, but by the time they arrived, the athlete was dead.
"He didn't say anything on the way. His eyes were moving a little, but then nothing," said Justin. "I was holding his head, but then I couldn't any longer."
Investigators are looking into whether Tisson was involved in an argument with someone at The Tropiks before leaving, but teammate Simon Polius told the NY Daily News that Tisson had been threatened about his relationship with Justin.
"One day somebody told him, 'If you don't leave her alone' he would kill him," Polius said. "She had a boyfriend back home."
Justin, who is a schoolteacher in St. Lucia, insists she and Tisson share nothing but a friendship that dates back to their childhood and denied there was any former or current boyfriend who may have threatened Tisson.
"I feel that my whole world is falling apart," his mother, Rosleyn Tisson, told The News by phone. "He was very serious about what he was doing."
Relatives said it was a day of mourning in St. Lucia. Tisson had been in New York since May for the tournament.
"We'll be playing for Phillip," the coach said. "That's what he would have wanted."
Tisson, a midfielder, played club football for clubs throughout the Caribbean including Canaries, Anse La Raye Young Stars and Helenites and leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.

Tennessee Server Says Alcohol, Guns Do Not Mix

By Alicia Cruz
The Black Urban Times
A server at Jackson's Bar & Bistro in Hillsboro Village, Tenn., filed a legal complaint with the state arguing that the mixture of guns and bars creates an unsafe work environment.
The complaint, with the name of the complainant redacted, alleges that it is a violation of Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations to allow permit holders to carry guns into places that serve alcohol, such as Jackson's.
The state legislature passed a new law allowing guns in establishments that serve alcohol earlier this year, but Restaurant owners may choose to post a sign prohibiting firearms, but Jackson's owner Tom Sheffer elected not to do so.
According to the complaint, the server has seen handguns carried into the restaurant and patrons forcefully ejected from the property.

Home of Rapper Young Buck Raided by IRS Agents

By Alicia Cruz
The Black Urban Times
The IRS launched a raid on the Hendersonville, Tenn., home of hip hop artist Young Buck August 3 seizing thousands of dollars in jewelry, audio equipment and other personal items, according to unsealed court documents obtained by The Tennessean.
The Internal Revenue Service claims the artist, who owed more than $300,000 in delinquent taxes for 2006 through 2008, failed to make payments to the agency after being notified on three different occasions in 2008 and 2009.
The Nashville natives lawyers filed a motion to protect his assets, but that failed to stop the raid.
Young Buck, whose real name is David Darnell Brown, told MTV News that this happened because he trusted his managers, lawyers and accountants while he focused on his music.
“From now on, I am going to stay on top of my own business,” Brown.
Brown, 29, also blamed his record label, with whom he was entangled in a long-standing legal battle with in order to sever contractual ties with G-Unit Records, which is owned by rapper 50 cent. After Brown was reportedly kicked out of the music group in April 2008, he was prevented from releasing his own songs.
He has just recently been released from that contract and plans to announce the news in the future, according to the website HipHopDX.
“I have a new team in place," announced Brown. "But I am also paying full attention now. Nothing like this will ever happen again. This is a huge wake-up call for all entertainers to stay on top of your own trusted employees and team members, and replace anyone that was put in place by your record label if the situation you have goes sour.”
In a statement the rapper released, he said that the agents seized personal property belonging to his personal assistant, the mother of his child and his son.
“The worst part of this isn’t the material stuff — that will all be replaced,” Brown wrote. “It’s what it does it does to the people around me. They took my kids’ PlayStation, my assistants’ computers, and baby’s mother’s jewelry.”
Additional items confiscated by U.S. Federal agents during the raid included furniture, platinum records, a movie poster of the Pacino remake of "Scarface," and a Breitling Bentley wristwatch valued at $31,000.
Brown and rapper 50 Cent (aka Curtis Jackson) have seemingly settled their feud and Brown stated he's been working on his latest album, which will reportedly be released under the G-Unit label.

Fast Moving NJ Blaze Leaves 30 Displaced, One Firefighter in ICU

The Black Urban times
A fast-moving blaze that broke out at a Memorial Avenue rooming house Saturday displaced at least 30 tenants and sent one Atlantic City firefighter to the hospital with serious injuries.
Fireman Robert D. Gragg suffered smoke inhalation that caused damages to his lungs. The two-year veteran was admitted to the intensive care unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.
Fire officials say the 11:45 p.m. blaze was sparked by an overheated hot plate, according to the Press of Atlantic City. Firefighters and neighbors rescued many of the tenants, including an elderly man trapped in a third-floor apartment.
Many tenants, none of whom were injured, fled with just the clothes on their backs. Witnesses said two children were tossed to safety from a second-floor window by a woman who jumped after them.

Homicide Investigation on Murder of NBA Star Lorenzen Wright Shifts To Ex-Wife
The Black Urban Times
A month after police found the bullet-riddled body of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright in a wooded area about 15 miles south of downtown Memphis, no one is in custody, but the homicide investigation hasn't exactly stalled.
Investigators seem to be focusing their attention on the ex-wife of the former Memphis Tiger and Memphis Grizzlies, Sherra Wright.
Neighbors of Ms. Wright told My Eyewitness News that homicide investigators searched Sherra Wright's home and a fire pit in the backyard because on one of the hottest nights of the year --the same night her ex-husband disappeared -- the mother of six started a fire in her backyard. The investigators could be seen removing several items from the home, and at one point, were in the backyard looking very carefully at Wright's grill and fire pit.
PREVIOUS COVERAGE OF LORENZEN WRIGHT INVESTIGATION
According to a WREG report, officers seized a letter that was addressed to Lorenzen and Sherra Wright and pieces of burned metal from the home.
Sherra Wright told police her ex-husband kept a shotgun in her Collierville home and a handgun in the family van. A search warrant showed that while Collierville police didn't find the weapons Sherra said her ex-husband owned, they did find documentation the weapons existed. That prompted police to see if the shell casings found near Wright's body match those of the guns that were in Sherra Wright's home.

Reports say Wright vanished after leaving Sherra home on the evening of Sunday, July 18th.
His mother, suspecting foul play, became concerned and reported him missing July 22. He was found dead nine days later on July 28.
He'd been shot multiple times, and at least 10 gunshots can be heard in the background on a 911 call made from Wright's cell phone just after midnight on the day he allegedly disappeared.
Approximately six weeks before Wright was found shot to death, Sherra told police she was confronted at her home by three gunmen who were looking for her former husband. In fear for her safety, Sherra says she did not disclose this fact to police until after her husband was found dead.
Her attorney, Coleman Garrett, said "If her ex-husband met the violent fate that has been reported, why wouldn't it be natural for her to think under the given circumstances something violent could happen to her."
Sherra told Collierville police that Lorenzen left her home carrying a box of drugs about 10:30 p.m. July 18th. He returned and left a second time with a sum of money. She told officers about a phone conversation she overheard him having with an unidentified individual before he left saying he was going to "flip something for $110,000".
When family friends were asked if they believed Wright had drugs, they said no.
Earlier this month, Wendy Wilson, the personal assistant to the former Atlanta Hawks player told ABC24-WPTY that she was in possession of audio recordings that depict Wright’s ex-wife threatening to harm him.
Wilson said that Sherra can be heard saying “things like if she caught him with anyone else, she’d have him 'F’d up.'
Wilson said she filed a report with Memphis police because she felt the recorded conversations were “threatening.” She said Lorenzen asked her to keep the tape, adding “he wouldn’t have asked me to keep them if he didn’t think he’d need them someday.”

Sherra divorce attorney, Gail Mathes, dismissed Wilson's claims saying that the personal assistant had a huge crush on Lorenzen and wanted the couple to split up.
Mathes said her client was a devoted mother of six, struggling to pay the bills, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
“I just feel like Sherra Wright is being placed in a bad light. She does not deserve it all. She’s been an incredible mother and woman," said Mathes who added that while her client had not worked in 17 years and was nearly $3 million in debt, she stood to gain nothing by killing her ex-husband because he was broke.
When the Wrights divorced, Lorenzen was ordered to pay his former wife $26,000 a month in child support and alimony. Mathes said the former NBA player, who earned more than $50 million during his career, had not made any payments since November 2009. “He gave her a little bit of money and she kept track of it. But, he wasn’t giving her much to support the family."
Following up on reports that Lorenzen was also seen at New Era Barber Shop getting a hair cut, police questioned owner Tavio Brigance about Lorenzen's mood and what clothing he was wearing the night he went to barbershop.
After investigating the sighting, including surveillance video, investigators determined that there was a mix up with the dates and Lorenzen was at the barbershop and it wasn't Monday evening, but rather Sunday evening.
Police have assured the public that this investigation has not been forgotten. "It's just a matter of time," MyFoxMemphis reported.
Police urge the public to come forward with any information, no matter how big or small, they may have. Your tip just may be the one investigators need to close this case. Call Crimestoppers at 528-CASH.

'Unique Thrift Store' in Watchung Draws Crowd, But Some Question Their Methods

The Black Urban Times
Monday was 25 percent-off day and a herd of bargain hunters packed the parking lot of Unique Thrift shop in Watchung.
Inside, shoppers moved from rack-to-rack delighting in their finds: Ralph Lauren dresses retailing for $14.99, Steve Madden shoes going for a cool $24.99 and pinstripe shirts for $4.99 each.
Unique isn't your mother's thrift shop, but a modern day thrift shop with items that's selling everything from Badgley Mischka gowns (priced at $700 and up in department stores) for a mere $114.99 to Stride Rite shoes ($3.99).
Shoppers love it, but members of the non-profit community are raising brows in unease at how Unique obtains it's electronic merchandise.
Unlike thrift store Goodwill, Unique is not a charity. It is a for-profit business that contracts with charities to pick up and buy their donated goods at bulk rates and keeps whatever it makes on resale, The Star-Ledger reported.

Behind The Scenes: Jazmine Sullivan - Holding You Down
Jazmine Sullivan was caught on set of her new video for her song called "Holding You Down". The video is for Jazmine's first single off of her new album titled "Love Me Back". There is no release date as of yet for Jazmine's album but it is expected sometime this fall.
As for the behind the scenes pictures, it looks like Jazmine is bringing it back to the "House Party" days. Instead of Kid N Play (which would've been dope) Jazmine recruited Missy Elliot, Dougie Fresh, Pete Rock, Pepa and Kwame! Since Jazmine Sullivan is Missy Elliot's artist, it's only right that Missy Elliot produced the track. ;-) Enjoy some more behind the scenes pics below:

Two Weeks After Co-op City Stabbings Police Make No Arrests

The Black Urban Times
A double stabbing that left two Co-op City teens seriously wounded was the result of a week-long dispute between a group of teenagers from section three, according to residents of the Northeast Bronx cooperative housing development.
The dispute erupted Sunday, August 15, at 4220 Hutchinson River Parkway in Section Five of Co-op City leaving an 18 and 20-year-old man stabbed, The Co-op City News reported.
Resident Gene Lopez, who had just returned home, said as soon as he entered the building, he observed two kids running then saw the wounded teens "on the floor in the back."
Lopez recalled the bloody scene saying one victim had multiple stab wounds and witnessed what he referred to as a "gang" of kids running.

"It looked like he was bleeding from multiple places. The other kid had his intestines coming out, like they twisted the knife and pulled it out. They wanted to kill him," said Lopez who added " 'Section Five,' kids have been battling, 'Valley kids,' who live on the other side of I-95, on Baychester Avenue, for more than twenty-years."
Lopez claimed he heard a woman threatening revenge in the minutes after the attack."I just hope the guys don't retaliate. This had been a quiet building."
Another tenant said his son watched the violence unfold on his television, explaining, "My son was looking at the camera in the lobby and saw a commotion and someone running."
A female tenant who claimed she knew both victims, said the stabbing was a result of teens from Section Three who had been fighting all week, The Co-op City News reported.
The 18-year old victim, an African American man and the 20-year-old Hispanic victim are both expected to recover from their injuries and are being treated at Jacobi Medical Center.
Co-op City, situated on 320 acres of land at the intersection of Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway, has 15,372 residential units in 42 apartment building --35 of which are high rise buildings. The cooperative housing community is the largest single residential development in the United States.
Police have made no arrests and ask the anyone with information on the stabbings to call the NYPD's CRIMESTOPPERS program at 1 (800) 577-TIPS.

Mother's Day Double Homicide Nets Arrest of Two Career Criminals

Quanisha Wright had just celebrated her 16th birthday when she and a friend planned to attend a birthday party on a Saturday night in May. It would be the last time her great-grandmother and two brothers would see her alive.
On May 9 around 1:15 a.m., gunshots rang out after two men returned to a birthday party for a one-year-old child seeking revenge against one person and shot two innocent people instead.
Wright and her friend, Marvin Wiggins were attending the party at 1776 Weeks Avenue in the Mount Hope section of the South Bronx, which had ended, but the two teens and friends remained behind to clean up when the shooting began.
WABC News reported that Wright was shot in the chest and arm after witnesses said she defended Latiia Eleazer’s mother, who was being taunted by the gunmen. Eleazer, 20, is the aunt of the child the birthday party was being held for. She was also shot, but survived. Wiggins was shot in the torso and later died of his injury. He was also trying to defend the elder Eleazer woman when the ruthless gunmen shot him.
"He was saving her, he was saving her!" insisted Marvin's girlfriend, Trisha.
"He didn't have no gun he was saving her! He saved a grown woman's life!" cried Marvin's aunt, MiAsia Chadwick, "Stop the violence!!!! This is crazy, please! These are babies, 15 and 16! My nephew and Quanisha were innocent! My God!"
Police arrested Dexter “Lil Dex” Green, 20, and Robert “Jacob” Mitchell, 24, the day after the shootings and charged both, who have extensive criminal records, with murder.
Mitchell's criminal dossier boasts of 12 prior arrests beginning in 2001, and ranging from possession of marijuana to attempted murder.
Green has eight arrests under his belt including a juvenile charge of assault.
Bronx newspaper The Gothamist reported that Green allegedly gave his father's .45-caliber gun to Mitchell, who was upset that he'd been ejected from the birthday party earlier in the evening and returned looking for payback against the man he fought with earlier.
The criminal duo showed up at the party uninvited and was allegedly harassing some of the female partygoers, which led to a fight between Mitchell and another man who was defending the honor of the young women.
According to the New York Post, Green gave the gun to Mitchell because he was going to "fight with his fists." Later, Green allegedly told police, "I'm so sorry -- I didn't know he was going to start shooting."
The Daily News reported that Mitchell told investigators that the only thing he was guilty of was smoking "angel [dust] every day."
Wright, who celebrated her 16th birthday the Friday before her murder, was a student at the Bronx Leadership Academy.
"She'd just had her first kiss. She was growing up and loving life. She was a wonderful kid," said her father's fiancée, Kenya Graham. "She was such a good child."
Andrea Wiggins, the mother of the second victim described her son a loving child. “He didn’t want anybody being hurt and now he’s gone,” the grief stricken mother said before shouting and wailing in anguish.
Hassan Wright, 13, the youngest of Wright's brothers described his big sister as “unique, smart and beautiful,” and said that he misses her.
Friends erected a memorial in the hallway of the apartment building Wiggins lived in where they gathered in memory of their friends whose lives were senselessly ended over an argument.
"Marvin died because of me," said Abdullah Mack, a friend of Wiggins'. Wracked with guilt, Mack told ABC News that he was the intended target, not Wiggins and Wright.
"We had a fight and he comes back with a gun and instead kills 2 innocent bystanders." Mack was the man Mitchell fought with earlier in the evening.
Both suspects are being held and face trial for the shootings.
Three Alarm Blaze in Bronx Injures Six

A three alarm blaze in the South Bronx ripped through a Sheridan Avenue apartment building across the street from William Taft High School last week displacing several tenants and leaving six people, including four fireman, with minor injuries.
All tenants were safely evacuated from 1504 Sheridan Avenue after the 3:30 p.m. blaze ignited in one of the building's fifth-floor apartments.
Jason Monegro was the first to call 911 after he saw flames coming from an electrical outlet near the television in his aunt’s apartment.
“I saw smoke coming out of my cousin’s bedroom,” Monegro said. “And then I saw the crib catch on fire. Monegro attempted to distinguish the flames, according to Bronx Ink, but when he was unsuccessful, he immediately dialed 911.

Co-op City's 'One Man Journalist' Still Going Strong 36 Years Later

If you're fortunate to meet him, he'll talk to you about his passionate dislike for President Obama, health care reform and the “left-wing ideologue idiots” opposing calls for the privatization of Co-op City, the world’s largest cooperative housing development.
He's Michael Horowitz, a 64-year-old Manhattan-raised Riverdale resident and he's been covering news happenings in Co-op City for 36 years, for his community newspaper, City News, which goes to print on Wednesday nights.
