Jacksonville adds Puerto Rican sister city

Jacksonville Business Journal

The City of Jacksonville added its eight sister city after Mayor John Peyton signed an agreement with San Juan Mayor Jorge Santini Friday afternoon.
The agreement follows the city’s work to strengthen ties with cities that have existing trade connections with the Port of Jacksonville. More than 75 percent of the goods shipped between Puerto Rico and the U.S. come through Jacksonville’s port.
The commerce between Puerto Rico and Jacksonville is estimated to have an annual $1 billion impact on the city. The island has suffered from the global recession, but shipping companies that supply Puerto Rico say trade is stabilizing.
Jacksonville’s other sister cities are Curitiba, Brazil; Bahia Blanca, Argentina; Masan, South Korea; Murmansk, Russia; Nantes, France; Port Elizabeth, South Africa; and Yingkou, China. The city also has friendship agreements with Chinese cities Shaoxing, Suzhou and Ningbo.
